President John Dramani Mahama has announced the creation of an Education Fund to cater for the schooling needs of children orphaned by the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
He disclosed the plan during the third-day funeral rites (Adua) of Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed on Tuesday, August 12, noting that the fund will be officially launched at the state funeral on Friday, August 15.
The President said the initiative will allow individuals and organizations to contribute towards securing the children’s future.
The helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District claimed eight lives, including key government officials and military personnel: Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
A national funeral at Black Star Square will be held to honor the victims and unveil the fund.
